Decembrist Loparev finds refuge in an Old Believer community in Siberia, but even there the shadows of the past catch up with him—and new deadly dangers as well. This book is the first part of an epic trilogy, where faith, freedom, and prejudice collide in a harsh yet mesmerizing atmosphere of the Siberian land.
“Hop.” The first part of the trilogy, in which the life of a particular corner of vast Russia—the Siberian region—is recreated. Through the example of an Old Believer schismatic community of Elder Filaret, the author tells of various unofficial religious currents of that era, into which the Decembrist Loparev gets, “so that the tsar’s servants cannot reach him by hand.” But even here he cannot feel safe. For the path from the darkness of prejudice to the attainment of freedom and happiness is difficult, yet the desire for freedom is unextinguishable.
