Magilers are not the kind magicians from fairy tales. Instead of cloaks, they wear uniforms of the Kaiser’s army; instead of spells, they use the rough language of military commands; instead of universal honor and respect, there are mud, rotten canned food, and the terrifying roar of endless artillery amid fields scarred by trenches of the World War. Magic doesn’t stand a chance against tanks, shrapnel, and poisonous gases. On the contrary, in this reality it was the magilers—frontline mages—that kept Germany from defeat in 1918. And who knows, maybe they’ll lead it to victory too—terrible victory, bought at a terrible cost.
