In the city of Turae lives a private detective named Fraks— a fat drunkard, a gambler, and a weak magician, as weak as it’s even possible to be. And yet, he manages to unravel the most complicated cases more often than not.
The help of Fraks is secretly sought by Princess Du-Akai, the daughter of the King of Turae. She asks him to get from a foreign diplomat a casket containing her love letters. It would seem everything is simple, but that only seems so. Instead of letters, the casket contains a scroll with a spell, and the diplomat is found dead—so naturally, the blame falls on Fraks. Soon the detective ends up at the center of a much more complex intrigue involving the kidnapping of the Purple Fabric of elves—the only known substance that does not allow magic through.
