The main hero of the tetralogy is the young Cossack Arsen Zvenygora.
This figure is not entirely fictional.
He had a real prototype: a Zaporizhian scout whom ataman Ivan Sirko, on the eve of an impending war, sent on an important mission to Turkey—to find out the military plans of the future enemy.
Fluent in Turkish, this brave and resourceful “secret envoy” managed to obtain and bring to Zaporizhzhia the firman (decree) of Sultan Mehmed IV about the upcoming campaign against Ukraine.
Realizing the extraordinary importance of this document, Sirko immediately sent it to Moscow, where it has been preserved to this day in the archives of the former Posolsky prikaz.
That’s how the strategic and tactical plans of the Porte became known.
Russian and Ukrainian troops, prepared in advance and concentrated near Chyhyryn, dealt a severe blow to the strong enemy, forced him to retreat, and made him abandon his plans.
