The meaning and purpose of history is a work by Jaspers. Jaspers proposes a concept of the world-historical process, oriented toward discovering its unity. This unity is understood not as the result of some totality unfolding itself according to a rigid scheme, but as the common outcome of human beings’ meaningful problems. Jaspers structures history into four periods: prehistory, the epoch of the great ancient cultures, the “axial time,” and the scientific and technical era.
If we ask what we should base our lives on and where we should go, the answer is: on faith in revelation, because outside of it there is only nihilism. One theologian recently said: “The decisive question—Christ or nihilism—is not an unjustified claim by the Church.” If it were really so, there would be no philosophy; there would be only, on the one hand, the history of philosophy as the history of disbelief—that is, a path toward nihilism; and on the other, a system of concepts serving theology.
