In the new industrial England, the basis of power is ether—a magical substance mined from the earth. The guilds that control this resource have the greatest influence. Ethergrandmis Alice Meinell, who leads the Telegraphers’ Guild, faces a problem: her son Ralf falls ill with a mysterious sickness. In search of salvation, she takes a desperate step—goes to Einfeld, the reservation for those whom ether has irreversibly changed. There she hopes to find a cure for her son. Her prayers are heard, and Ralf miraculously recovers. However, once healed, he seeks a life of his own.
