“Even if we didn’t work out, I wish you happiness. Loving isn’t as scary as you think. It’s true—sometimes it hurts.”

This message Dina sent after she put my resignation letter on my desk.

Did I imagine my future with her? No, probably not. For one thing, I didn’t have time. And secondly, I was never known for imagination. But that she irritates me and hooks me—that’s for sure. Without her it’s empty.

Between us there are so many “buts” that it might be time to exhale in relief. I’m much older, I have a daughter, and—also—my younger brother is in love with Dina.

But somehow it’s only the stale cigarette smoke that fades away, and the familiar loneliness no longer feels comfortable.

After turning off the screen, I put the phone in my pocket. I want to write her back something—but, as always, there are no suitable words.
