Batu Khan

The novel tells how unbearably the inhabitants of conquered lands suffered when Batu Khan’s iron detachments passed through their territories—an avalanche of hundreds of thousands of riders swept them away like a chip on the crest of a sea wave and deposited them on the bank of the great river Itil, where that swarthy, narrow-eyed leader founded the mighty kingdom of the Golden Horde.
