The events in the novel “Rebellious Angelique / Angelique in Rebellion / The Rebel from Poitou” take place in the remote forests of France, where a Huguenot uprising is brewing against the merciless rule of the king. Returning from the East to France, Angelique is arrested. The king sends her a letter demanding that she become his mistress. Rejecting the king, she joins the rebels from Poitou—her native region.
The rebellion lasts for about three more years, but someone betrays her, and she is forced to flee, pursued by the king’s soldiers. Angelique finds temporary shelter with her brother the abbot, after which she still ends up in prison. She is saved by a certain Mr. (Meter) Bern and taken into his service without knowing that she is a marquise. In the port city of La Rochelle, she leads a peaceful, quiet life—but only for a while. Because of the struggle between Catholics and Huguenots, a group of people led by Bern and Angelique must keep saving themselves. And again, the mysterious pirate Rescatòr stands in her way…
