Angelique and Geoffroy overcome a conflict with representatives of the colonial authorities of Quebec and with the Iroquois tribes, but not everything goes according to plan. They have to endure a harsh winter in a small mine; at the end of winter they suffer from hunger, but receive help from friendly Indigenous people. They learn that in Canada they now have an enemy—Jesuit Sebastian d’Orgeval, who claims that the rumor about the appearance of some Acadia demon in a woman’s guise is directly connected to Angelique. He accuses Angelique of witchcraft and Geoffroy of insufficient faith.
