This summer, the Jean brothers already familiar to us from other books in the “Adventures of the Family from Cherbourg” series are going on vacation by the sea, to the Scarlet Rocks hotel. On the program: a secret expedition around the hotel during quiet hour, a unique performance by the Pipolo Circus, and, of course, the famous Tour de France bicycle race, which the Jean brothers will finally see with their own eyes. Dangerous adventures, wild laughter, and pillow fights—the holidays promise to be unforgettable, especially for the parents…
The author of this book, the Frenchman Jean-Philippe Arrou-Vignod, is one of those very six Jean brothers who will be discussed here. Or, more precisely, Jean B., the second oldest. From early childhood Arrou-Vignod loved reading. In 1984 he published his first “adult” novel, for which he received the Best Debut prize, and a few years later released his second book—a children’s one. Today Arrou-Vignod, author of about thirty books, heads the children’s literature department at France’s largest independent publishing house, Gallimard. He created his series “Adventures of the Family from Cherbourg,” so beloved by children and parents in France, together with the well-known illustrator Dominique Corbasson, whose works can be seen in magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Madame Figaro, and Vanity Fair. In spirit, the “Adventures of the Family from Cherbourg” are reminiscent of the famous Little Nicolas by René Goscinny and Jean-Jacques Sempé: the heroes of the “Family” are the same cheerful, restless boys always ready to get into some mischief.
