1979. In one of the Latin American states, a pro-Soviet government is in power. This doesn’t please American intelligence services. They are secretly preparing a political coup, artificially heating up the situation in the country. Under unclear circumstances, the head of security of the Soviet embassy dies; then secret information from our diplomatic mission is leaked to the other side… To expose the “mole” in the rebellious capital, a major of the KGB, Vadim Svetlov, is sent in under the cover of an embassy staff member. He recruits an informant among the CIA staff. But the agent is found dead after the first contact with the major. Svetlov realizes he’s in the crosshairs of a serious enemy—an enemy who is smart and cold-blooded. In his arsenal are logic, persistence, and precise calculation. He’s sure he knows how to defeat us in this confrontation. But the enemy doesn’t account for one thing: on his path stand super-professionals of their craft—people of risk, honor, and unbending will—the Soviet counterintelligence officers.
“‘In Valery Sharapov’s novels, you can feel time so strongly that it seems like just a little more and you’ll be among the heroes of these books—unfazed investigators, cunning criminals, and frightened citizens. And desperate detectives will take you for one of their own and immediately involve you in the next dangerous operation…’” — Sergey ZVEREV, author of action novels
