The 1990s, a Daghestani village, Tsurib. Young Kishtama lives with her father, Ismail, and her younger brother. Her mother and stepmother died four years apart—and both times it was a leap year. Kishtama’s friend, Maryam, against her will becomes Ismail’s next wife; she fears repeating the fate of her predecessors and is convinced that a leap year will bring her death.
Kishtama is engaged to Arsen—Maryam’s brother. Arsen leaves to work and earn money for the wedding, but on a construction site trouble strikes: he loses his arm. Ismail is not ready to accept that his daughter will marry an amputee, and he looks for another groom for her. However, Kishtama cannot bring herself to give up her love for Arsen. She decides to run away and goes to him, so she can be near and support him.
But will Arsen have a bride waiting for him when his life splits into “before” and “after”? Can Kishtama marry without her father’s blessing, if Ismail has sworn he will never agree to this marriage? And will Maryam manage to escape the grim prophecy of the leap year?..
