A powerful earthquake devastated Sparta, sparking a revolt by the helots. This put the city’s rulers on the brink of disaster, forcing them to seek support from allies.

But when the Athenian troops arrived to help, the Spartans issued them an ultimatum: leave immediately or face danger in an unequal battle. Wounded, the Athenians abandoned Sparta, and in their city support grew for those who wanted to exploit Sparta’s weakness to eliminate the southern threat and unite the Greek city-states into a powerful empire.

These reformers were led by Pericles—famous as a politician and military leader. Yet his struggle was not only against aggressive Sparta. In Athens, there were plenty of jealous people who wanted to rob “the lion of Attica” of his glory.
