An exciting detective story in retro style continues the line of Boris Akunin’s works about the detective Erast Fandorin, while also breathing new life into the genre. The main character, the sleuth Ilya Ardov, stands out for his extraordinary visual memory, which allows him to recreate scenes of crimes in his mind. This ability quickly makes him well known in the criminal circles of the 19th century.

Ardov takes on the investigation of a mysterious incident in which, in the office of Councillor Kasyan Kostoglot, a pig’s head is suddenly discovered. This could be someone’s failed joke—or a sign of a secret, far more sinister plan. Soon it becomes clear that a series of inexplicable deaths follows this case, at first glance unconnected. Ardov has to radically rethink his methods of searching to solve the mystery and face a clever and ruthless opponent lurking in the shadows. It becomes a personal battle where the stakes are extremely high, and Ardov realizes that he may have to sacrifice himself to uncover the truth.
