In the late 16th century and the first half of the 17th century, Chinese literature experienced a period of flourishing of folk tales. At that time, Chinese intellectuals actively searched for and collected works in the genre of hua ben across the country.
This edition gathers tales from five well-known collections from that period. Stories like "The Pearl Shirt" amaze with their astonishing nature and deserve to be preserved. Included here are romantic detective tales, everyday stories, stories of legendary friendship, historical works, and real fantasy—making this collection, in a sense, a Chinese Decameron.
