Hans Fallada (1893–1947) entered the history of German and world literature as one of the biggest critical realists of the 20th century, the creator of significant works filled with sorrow and sharp pity for people, devoted to the lives of the lower classes of German society.
The novel “Iron Gustav” was published in 1938. It is a socio-historical chronicle set in Germany in the era of the Kaiser, the First World War, and the Weimar Republic.
The novel’s main character is Gustav Hackendahl, a Prussian retired sergeant—a successful businessman who rules his family in a despotic manner and is nicknamed “Iron” for the strength of his character.
