Reserve regiment—front line—retreat—encirclement… Staying in this deadly whirl is terrifying, and jumping off it is even worse. But somehow I managed—twisted, wriggled free, got myself attached to a “warm spot,” only it turned out not to be very warm. If not bullets, then shrapnel from German bombs keeps trying to drive itself into my coffin. And it’s unclear whether I’ll manage to return back or whether I’ll have to settle permanently in this uncomfortable world. We’ll see—time will tell.
