Description
In the novella of 1864 “Notes from Underground,” Dostoevsky raises the question of the relationship between an individual and the surrounding world. In a vivid and expressive confession, the author presents the inner world of a personality with a consciousness tragically torn apart, showing all the movements and shades of his soul. The main hero of the novella, the underground man, is a generalized image of a certain “little man.” He is closed off and embittered, has no possibility for self-realization, feeling only falseness, corruption, and stupidity of life. He does not want to make his will subordinate to the laws of necessity—accepting the rules widely recognized by everyone. The hero believes that a person has the right to surrender to his whims and desires.
