All the Gold in the World

On the lake in the mountains above legendary Beverly Hills, the body of a businessman from South Africa—who worked in the United States—is discovered. The investigation, to which the Russian detective Oleg Potemkin is attached, faces a shocking fact: huge amounts of gold and cash were moving through the murdered man. Everything looked lawful on the surface, but the further the investigation goes, the more tangled the criminal business becomes—one where “people die for metal.” Gold schemes, laundering dirty money, tons of cash from drug trade routed through respectable banks, an entire international criminal network, with the murdered man as a small link in it. The businessman’s murder is solved. Yet the detective understands clearly that, at best, he can cut off one tentacle of a gigantic sea monster—no one can eliminate the entire criminal system.
