Dragonriders of Pern: Dragonflight

11 hrs. 23 min.
Many generations ago on Pern—a flourishing, Earthlike planet orbiting the yellow star Rakbat in the distant constellation of Sagittarius—people from Earth settled. The new world seemed like paradise, and the settlers established a colony here. No one then suspected that around Pern, along a stretched elliptical orbit, travels the Scarlet Star—a tiny red planet that, once every two hundred years, as it approaches Pern, showers its atmosphere with silvery Threads—spores that kill all living things. Paradise turns into hell, and this disaster lasts for half a century. The only protection against this cosmic menace is the fire-lizards: winged lizards that breathe flame and burn away the deadly Threads. Over time, the descendants of Earthmen bred them into enormous dragons, called upon to guard the planet; each dragon has a rider—a human bound to his winged partner by a strong mental link. But there are also long Intervals, when the Scarlet Star’s orbit takes it far away and the Threads do not reach Pern. And then, during one such period, when life on Pern has settled into peaceful routine and memories of the former tragedies have faded, belief in the riders’ and dragons’ destiny begins to wane. It is then that the sky over Pern flares up again with the ominous glow of the approaching Scarlet Star…

In 2026, the world reading community will be marking the centenary of the writer’s birth, and this edition is timed to coincide with that momentous date.
