Time to Live! is the sixth and final book of the grand saga “The Russian Cross” about a generation that changed the country. The narrative spans more than twenty pivotal and eventful years of modern Russian history. The novel’s main characters—a quartet of school friends—face a difficult fate. They fall in love, part ways, make mistakes, move forward, defending their truth, changing together with the country. The book also contains all the dramatic moments of that complicated time: the collapse of the state and the change of the social order, wars and new market relations, the first bourgeois pleasures and gangster squabbles… Unlike the five previous books (“The Lost Paradise,” “Unflinching Generation,” “Good Wishes,” “Whirls of Change,” “Wolf Songs”), the title of the final part sounds optimistic. Does that mean that in the lives of the main characters everything falls into a familiar track? No. Life sets new, difficult challenges before them. How will they meet the demands of the times, their own inner doubts and contradictions? That is what the reader will find out. The novel does not put a final period in the characters’ fates. “Time to Live!” is coming.
