Coauthored with his wife, Svetlana Aleksandrovna Safronova: in 1958, he published his first novel, “The Grandchildren of Our Grandchildren.” The plot repeats H. G. Wells’s novel “When the Sleeper Wakes,” but here the action takes place in a utopian communist future in 2017, where the hero ends up after a century-and-a-half long sleep. In addition, in the early 1960s, Yuri Safronov published several science-fiction stories written in the then-traditional “close range” science fiction, which (as R. Heinlein put it) were “slightly disguised engineering reports.”
