Writer Roman Averyanov, shattered by personal failures, arrives in the Urals town of Chernopad to write a commissioned book about the flourishing enterprise “Divya.”
Almost immediately after his arrival, he faces the inexplicable: he feels a foreign presence, the forest frightens him and seems populated by otherworldly beings, and in the hotel window he sees his double. The locals tell legends about terrifying “Divya” people who live near the Black Pad.
On top of that, Roman is torn between two women: the company’s owner, Margarita, and her stepdaughter Sonya, who is convinced that her stepmother is a witch and a killer.
The deeper Roman delves into the local secrets, the harder it is for him to understand who is lying, who can be trusted—and why he ended up here in the first place.
