After long and difficult adventures, Katya Miroshkina finally returns to her parents in the world of gods. All dangers are behind her, but the girl has never felt lonelier. Katya had to part with Yarusha and Mogina; everything around her is alien and unfamiliar, and her parents can’t give her time: her mother is constantly busy, while her father keeps avoiding her. Trying to talk to them, the girl accidentally overhears their argument about her: on her long road home, she left open a passage into the world of gods. A thief used it—sneaking into Veles’s palace and stealing the important diaries. Veles and Makoшь think the diaries were taken by an accomplice of the Byzantine emperor, since the states are on the brink of war. But the diaries are lost in the world of people together with the thief.
Katya, along with Danyar—the girl’s guide and protector—sets out to search for the diaries to help her father. Yet the true enemy is far more frightening than the Byzantine king and the possible war between the states. In her new trial, she encounters one of the highest gods, equal in strength and power to Veles—Chernobog. He tells the girl things her parents never shared with her; he lures her with a family secret and a chance to learn the truth. However, Chernobog’s intentions are not noble: he wants to use Katya to get what he wants. Can she stand against such power? How can one find the truth in a tangled world of gods?
