Description
“Vera” belonged among A. P. Chekhov’s favorite works. “Your ‘Vera’ is being praised a lot,” Chekhov’s older brother wrote to him on February 22, 1887. V. Bilibin noted in his letter to Chekhov dated March 6, 1887: “It seems to me that you wanted to portray not the isolated case described above, but a special category of modern people, whose hearts, due to the circumstances of life, have dried up like a flower in… a lexicon. They long to love, but cannot.”
In the first critical reviews of “Vera,” Chekhov’s mastery, the depth of psychological analysis, the penetration into the secret secrets of the human soul were praised—yet at the same time people mentioned that the story is unfinished, representing a “cut-off episode.” D. V. Grigorovich classified “Vera” among the stories where Chekhov is captivated by the theme of love “in all the finest and most hidden manifestations.”
