Ernest Cunningham, an aficionado of classic detective stories and an author of books in that genre, outshines the local police in his use of deductive methods. He quickly earned a reputation by solving two famous crimes.
His ex-wife Erin asks for his help, because she is accused of murdering Lyle Pierce. She doesn’t remember how it happened, even though the victim’s blood was found on her. Pierce, previously a successful actor, after his brother’s death left Hollywood and returned to Australia to help drug addicts through a foundation he had founded. He built theaters and staged performances, believing that art is the best way to rehabilitate.
Ernest begins his investigation in the city of Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, where the Christmas show of magician Rylan Blaze is scheduled to take place—an entertainer Pierce also helped. Cunningham believes the killer is one of the performers in the show. But the case is complicated by the fact that at Christmas everyone has their own secrets.
