P. I. Melnikov’s epic (“Andrey Pechersky”) “In the Woods” and “On the Mountains” is his main literary work, to which the writer devoted about twenty years. These books opened to the reader an entire area of Russian reality that previously had not been illuminated or studied. Melnikov told about Zavolzhye and the Highlands as they were in the mid-nineteenth century—about the Old Believer merchants who traded along both banks of the Volga; about the everyday life and trades, manners and customs of the local population; about the sectarians, the schismatic deserts, and their inhabitants. The talent of a realist artist and an outstanding storyteller combined in Melnikov with deep knowledge of the history of the schism, ethnography, folklore, the language of the people—knowledge he widely used in his epic. Vivid scenes and dialogues, expressively drawn characters alternate in both works with historical digressions, descriptions of small-scale industries, folk celebrations, schismatic rituals, desert life, and the devotions of the Khlysty. In both books, legends and beliefs, proverbs and sayings, popular and spiritual songs are widely incorporated into the narrative. The combination of all these elements creates a special, inimitable flavor of Melnikov’s epic.
