Late 19th century. Petersburg. A young noblewoman dreams of becoming a ballerina and performing at the Mariinsky Theatre. She is overcome by a secret obsession: the girl searches for a message she left for herself in a past life beyond the frame of an antique mirror. Now and then—either in fever dreams or in sleep—she sees a knight’s castle, battles, a plague of the plague, and meets the Teutonic Knight, the Giant, and Verzilа—her friends and heroes from the first book. In the real world, fate brings her together with very strange people, and it’s not immediately clear who is friend and who is enemy. After the 1917 Revolution, the ballerina has to flee abroad from the new authorities, and in Berlin and Paris—along with both new and old allies—she searches for the Monk’s letters that will point to the location of a long-destroyed castle, where the Host’s treasures are kept. But most important of all is to obtain the Thirteenth Scroll and the golden medallion bearing the inscription “The Past and the Future in the Present”—they are needed to make the next transition to new incarnations.
