A far future. Humankind has spread throughout the universe, nearly forgetting its mother planet. But it still hasn’t rid itself of many of its vices: corruption, cruelty, indifference, segregation, and the thirst for power. Yet these vices somehow coexist with virtues: the ability to dream, to hope, to sacrifice oneself, and to love.
The novel’s main character is Tom Hunt — a cynical reporter-blogger who has long stopped believing in miracles. The plot unfolds across three timelines: in Tom’s past, when he was a young student doing everything possible to ridicule reactionary politicians, police, and dull everyday people; during the Long Reconnaissance expedition, which leaves no hope of finding the lost arks of humankind; and on the way home, in a bachelor’s den on the barren planet Bahrain, where he must decide for himself: is it worth judging humankind only by its vices, or does it deserve hope?
Although, of course, it’s also possible that instead he will simply get drunk and start firing a shotgun at an old roadside sign…
