"Shadows of the East End" is a continuation of the bestseller “Call the Midwife” by Jennifer Worth. From the early 1950s to the mid-1970s, Jennifer worked as a midwife in the poor London neighborhood of the East End. In a city scarred by the recent war—half-destroyed houses, vacant lots, and blocked streets—she learned stories of those who still remembered even harsher times. Poverty and hunger forced people to seek shelter in workhouses—being admitted to which was a real tragedy. Separated families, exhausting labor, and cruel punishments for offenses were their everyday reality. Officially closed in 1930, workhouses remained until the mid-20th century: thousands of people were still there, and they had nowhere else to go.
