Officer Isevdrir Norgaard, along with his regiment of mercenaries, arrives in the remote province of Kaellarh, recently conquered by the kingdom of Ereya. They are meant to maintain peace and order here—but the locals hate the invaders, so there can be no talk of either order or peace. In addition, the regiment has been tasked with destroying the organization of Kaellarh rebels—the mysterious Circle. And the mercenaries, conducting their investigation, do not shy away from either torture or murder.

Meanwhile, Norgaard himself gets drawn into a complicated, multi-stage conspiracy involving both local nobility and Ereyan commanders, and even the necromancer sent from the capital.

Step by step, the supreme power tightens its grip. A rebellion is brewing—but no one yet knows what surprises this swampy, forested, backward region holds, and some of them are so horrifying that all human cruelty pales in comparison to them—just childish fantasies.
