Description
It’s been hard for the actors of Kotomtsov’s small troupe who didn’t get an engagement for the winter season—they have to wander through small provincial towns and try to attract audiences there instead of in the capital.

However, the public will enjoy not plays by Ostrovsky (besides, the merchants would be offended that they’re being mocked), but the performances of magicians, clowns, and trained dogs.

So the actors end up in debt like in silk, but still they keep trying to stage shows in the hope of getting a sufficient box office. And it seems their own problems weren’t enough—right behind them comes a young merchant’s son, captivated by the beauty of one of the actresses.

As always with N. A. Leykin, readers are waiting for the polished style of a master satirist, laughter through tears, and a wealth of fascinating everyday details and signs of the times.
