In 1989–1990, a four-volume collection of novellas by contemporary Moscow writers of the middle generation was published. In the works of these authors, the ideas of restoring social justice, democracy, glasnost, civic activity, and courage were expressed with significant completeness—ideas that had long been ripening in society. Taken together, these works carry a large charge of moral energy and artistic beauty.
