– Where is Mom? Mom, where are you? – the little girl asks in a pleading voice. She turns her head. But on this shore of the island, where the waves have thrown us after the disaster, her mother isn’t here.
– Don’t worry, – I reassure her. – Your mom is fine. We’ll find her. She must be somewhere here too.
So where?
– The pirates grabbed her! – the boy blurts out. – And we’ll free her!
He’s already managed to find a stick. He waves it. He’s got a fighting spirit.
He’s soaked through, just like we are, but he doesn’t get discouraged.
– There are no pirates, – I respond. – You’ve been watching too many things. Don’t hit your sister with that stick.
– I want to write, – the little one suddenly whines.
That’s the last thing I needed.
– So what am I supposed to do with you? – I sigh, overwhelmed by the stack of problems.
Being stranded on an uninhabited island with two restless kids is absolute hell—especially for a man who has no idea how to deal with them in the first place. And it makes things even worse that these are children of the woman who’s missing. She herself still has to be found. I hope the waves have thrown Anya onto this same island too. It would be great to ask her a question—who are these kids from?
