In a residential block called Chosers Tower, investigators find a young man and a girl chained to a radiator— the first is dead, the second barely alive. The scene recreates a terrible episode from the past of inspector Kim Stone: she had lived in this block, and thirty years ago she miraculously survived in exactly the same way—while her brother died.
