The novel “Sweet and Honorable” is the third book of the author’s tetralogy about the Second World War. The action takes place in Germany; the center of the story is the attempt of a coup on July 20, 1944—the so-called “plot of the generals” against Hitler. Alongside fictional characters, real historical figures appear from the Supreme Command of the German Army—officers from the circle of Colonel Stauffenberg. In this part, the novel is strictly documentary. At the same time, against the backdrop of the war’s final period and the collapse of the Hitler regime, the fate of Ludmila Zemtseva is also shown—she was taken to Germany in 1941. The powerful love that arose between her and the German officer Erich Dornberger—who is among the plotters—is emphasized. A wide picture of the anti-Nazi underground is presented, and the brutal bombing of Dresden is described.
