The first day of Christmas. Frosty air literally slices your lungs. Along a road covered in cracks that slopes down from a mountain slope to the highway, no one has been driving for a long time. Along the edge of a cliff over a disused quarry, a black-and-white border collie darts—sometimes dropping to its belly and crawling right up to the edge, sometimes jumping wildly on all four paws. Down there, soon, they will find the body of its owner. Local police will discover on the corpse traces clearly indicating that the body was dragged to the cliff. Which means it’s not an accident, and Major Crime Inspector Karen Aiken Hornby will have to interrupt the family celebration and urgently go to the crime scene.
