The Overcoat

In this novella, the theme of the humiliation of the “little man” is explored most fully. Bashmachkin, as a representative of the “little people,” is crushed by the “well-ordered state” and the “well-ordered society” in which he lives. He cannot withstand it and perishes—unable to adapt and overcome the oppressive power he confronts: the force of the social state structure.
