Description
Suad and Süreyya have been married for five years. Their life seems calm and measured, but one day the summer heat thrusts them out of their stuffy city mansion to the waters of the Golden Horn. For her husband’s happiness, Suad borrows money from her father and rents a villa by the shore, where Süreyya can go out to sea every day, while she—keeps a quiet home life filled with care, music, and waiting.

It is there, amid summer walks, the sea’s light, and the evening sounds of the piano, that Nejib appears more and more often in their home—Süreyya’s cousin. Disillusioned with love, accustomed to seeing in women only frivolity and pretense, he unexpectedly discovers in Suad a different world: selflessness, inner delicacy, fidelity, a beauty that needs no words. Gradually, admiration turns into a feeling that has no place in their lives.

Suad and Nejib are faced with an impossible choice: to keep the debt—or to acknowledge the rule of the heart. Their love does not seek scandal, does not demand infidelity, and does not dare to run away—it lives in music, in looks, in silence, and in the tormenting awareness of its own forbiddenness. But a feeling that is not meant to be spoken aloud becomes all the stronger the more hopeless it seems.

Mehmet Rauf’s novel is a subtle and piercing story of love, doomed from the very first moment; of conscience, desire, and the quiet tragedy of people who are too noble to be happy.
