Alexander Gefter’s novel “The Secret Courier” is in many ways autobiographical and tells of the dangerous work of white underground agents during the Civil War. The novel is dedicated to the memory of the secret couriers who died—“nameless, like their graves.” This is a heartfelt account of the perilous adventures of the sailor Ketter, a Baltic Fleet man who escaped from St. Petersburg during the revolution. He’s recruited by British intelligence, and Keller becomes a secret courier, carrying messages between the Northern and North-Western armies of the Whites and the White Guard in St. Petersburg and Kronstadt.
