Student Polina studies in Siberia, where she moved from a cozy, exotic little town in Central Asia—her childhood home. But this town has a frightening trait: too often, very young people die here. Polina’s mother keeps a grim family secret hidden, while the girl herself has one of her own—personal, and also connected to death.

Is that why she keeps getting so unlucky? Or is the cause Saratone?

Trying to change her fate, Polina clings desperately to the right to happiness as the familiar world around her collapses: after the breakup of the Union, the country is rapidly sliding into an abyss.

Her road to herself is tangled and uneven, full of wrong turns and dead ends. But, as in real life, there is room here for losses and victories, quiet sorrow and love, falls and rises—and perhaps, a miracle.
