Description
Nina Petrovskaia (1879—1928) is a striking representative of women’s prose of the Silver Age, widely known among Moscow’s Symbolists. She was the muse of Andrei Bely, Valerii Briusov, and Sergei Auslender. In 1911, she permanently emigrated from Russia.

The central theme of her work is the fateful rupture between the dream of a perfect, almost mystical love and the reality of earthly relationships. A typical hero of Petrovskaia is the eternally yearning decadent, a lonely dreamer searching for his ideal. A mysterious and often cruel lady appears to him: she grants moments of happiness but condemns him to suffering. These broken souls wander through misty streets; their fantasies and memories have mingled with the cold light of the moon.

The book includes the collection “Sanctus Amor” (“Holy Love”), created under the impact of her break with Briusov, and stories from periodicals.
