High school student Ёжик studies at a science lyceum and ends up in bioengineering and gene-biology institute for summer practice, where, for the benefit of humanity, they study the unique properties of animal shapeshifters. Ёжик and his friends accidentally discover that one of these test animals—Samson the bear—is intelligent. Samson is the institute’s most valuable specimen. He was brought from faraway Vancouver, where in a local lab they conducted research on teaching shapeshifters speech. Living in captivity, all the animals the students study suffer, but freeing them is practically impossible: the test subjects are monitored around the clock, and there’s an access control system in the institute. Ёжику must solve a serious question: what is more important—scientific progress or compassion for a living creature?
