Unconquered Rus' 4. Out of the Shadows
7 hrs. 44 min.
I woke up—black snow, bodies in the square, crows tearing at flesh.
Ryazan has been burned. The Tatars are gone, but their dogs— the Kipchaks—are rounding up the survivors. And right beside me, a child with white hair calls my name. He says I am Ratmir, a warrior who promised to protect his people.
Me? Yesterday I lived in a completely different era. Today—bare and among the dead, with someone else’s body and someone else’s memories.
What’s to do?
There’s only one answer. Russians don’t cry—Russians fight.
I raised my sword, gathered those who had survived, and for the first time I realized: my time is here now. The Tatars think Rus’ has already been conquered.
They’re wrong.
I’m not here to die along with Ryazan. I’m here to start a liberation war.
