This book includes two seminars given by the Tibetan guru Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. These seminars contain teachings of Trungpa that have never been published before, on the view and practice of Buddhist meditation.
Only the practice of seated meditation, as the Buddha himself taught, can lay the foundation for a true understanding of the Buddha’s teachings. If people were able to sit down and continue sitting without expecting results, a hole could be created in the protective system of the ego and unconditional awareness could begin to shine through.
But the ego fiercely resists unconditional awareness.
The teachings in this book on basic meditation—shamatha and vipashyana (mindfulness and awareness)—provide the foundation that every practitioner needs.
Meditation practice is a way of removing masks from ourselves, from all kinds of misconceptions; it is also a way to bring to the surface subtle aspects of intelligence that exist within us. At its core, there is no doubt—absolutely no doubt—that meditation is the only way for us to begin our spiritual journey. This is the only path. The very path.
