Description
Vasily Ivanovich Klyuev spent twenty years checking someone else’s accounts and never once counted on ending his career with a ten-year-old heir to the Russian throne.
But facts are facts: 1788, St. Petersburg, the body—a grand duke Alexander Pavlovich, the grandson of Catherine the Great. Professional deformation—at his own expense. The habit of matching income to expenses, too. And very soon the entire court will learn what happens when a government auditor gains access to the state in the literal sense.
While adults coo over the "curious boy," Alexander methodically builds what this country desperately needs: schools, honest ledgers, a free press—and the habit of asking “why don’t the numbers add up?” of anyone who thought for sure no one would ever ask.
There will be less blood than in the history textbook. And more exposés.
