Dina Reznikova followed her usual route—a night train to Moscow, where she worked part-time as a translator during negotiations. Her seatmate was a man who was so drunk he might as well have been dead, and he had scattered his things all over the compartment. While picking them up, Dina noticed an old document in an unknown language, but at the time she didn’t pay it any mind—after all, soon her childhood friend Boris Posadsky arrived in the compartment, too, heading for the capital. And in the morning Dina discovered she’d lost her passport and, instead of checking into a hotel, ended up staying in Boris’s rented apartment. But that turned out not to be the worst of it.
