Here life is in full force, and peace (in another sense of the word) is something everyone only dreams of. Truth triumphs over ignorance, while life tries to triumph over death—and often succeeds.

There are no bad or good, kind or evil, successful or unsuccessful—there are only doctors and patients (relatives of patients don’t count, because nothing about them appears in medical case histories).

Everything is just like life, and yet everything is different.

Leave all hope, whoever enters here, because instead of hope you’ll receive a prognosis—inevitably attached to every diagnosis…

The stories included in this book began in different places and under different circumstances. But all of them became part of the story of humankind that is written in emergency rooms, and that is what unites them.

This book is not about the Emergency Room, but about the paths that bring people here—and, of course, about love.
