In the novel “Prime Minister,” the author skillfully portrays Disraeli and Gladstone under the names Dobeney and Gresham.

The struggle between parties in the British Parliament, the feud between Disraeli and Gladstone, and the personalities of these two statesmen are especially vividly described in the preceding part of this series, “Phineas Returns.”

“Prime Minister,” although it features heroes who played a role in the previous novels, forms a complete whole in itself, and is of interest even to readers who are not familiar with the earlier parts.

“Of course, every person is glad to know who his grandfathers and grandmothers were, if he has ambition to move in the upper circles of society, and it is also pleasant—so that he can speak of them as persons who played some part in their day. There is no doubt that we all highly respect those who, through their own energy, rose to prominence in society; and when we hear that the son of a washerwoman became Lord Chancellor or the Archbishop of Canterbury, we theoretically and abstractly feel a great deal more respect for such a self-made magnate than for a man who, as it were, was born in the judicial or ecclesiastical purple.”
